Meeting with Peter Newsome

Some of you who know my work might think I am on some sort of a mission to mention the word Peter Newsome as many times as possible in a week. Last night local Brisbane SEO Peter Newsome and I met up at Vroom on James Street, a local executive and fashionista hang out, perfect for two of Google’s “best looking guys in Brisbane”. Since Peter had publicly acknowledged that he was not competing in the great Brisbane SEO competition for the position of google’s illustrious “best looking man in Brisbane” award, I thought it was time that we joined heads and got together socially.

The agenda for the night was basically just to catch up, talk shop, share some ideas and talk about some partnering opportunities. The first thing I noticed about Peter, ever after having met him before a couple of times is that he is very good at explaining what it is that he does and communicating. Topics soon steered from day to day business activities into our next goal after convincing Google that we were good looking (about as hard as convincing the Pope he’s catholic) which is of course World Domination! What I found interesting was that Wikipedia actually dedicates a whole page to world domination which can be found here: Wikipedia world domination. Wikipedia even gives a comprehensive list of people who have tried to take over the world which I thought was hilarious…

Will Peter Newsome and I be the next in line for such a prestigious honour? I also funny that taking over the world is referred to as a colloquial word for “world domination”.

Vroom Cafe

The night was very interesting, perhaps the great atmosphere at Vroom helped make it easier to relax and enjoy a good conversation. Some of the topics discussed were:

One of the funny things about internet marketing or any other field I have ever been involved in where really determined, success minded people get together is every time you are around these people you just want to do more of it. This year I have really started to get into domaining, I probably have somewhere between 80-100 domains and it’s safe to say that about 60 of them completely suck. It’s been a learn experience and I’m quiet lucky a lot of those domains that suck are quiet good to develop as websites in good solid markets. The whole experience of creating new websites and domaining more and more over the past two years has proven something to me, this is what I want to do.

While I still dabble a bit in the corporate world through various marketing engagements, the internet is where it is at. You have to work really hard, especially when you are launching a site and there are many long, late nights, but at the end of the day when you see that you start to get some decent rankings and traffic starts pouring in and the revenue starts to trickle, there is nothing more satisfying.

Sure you can make a good sales commission in the corporate world, or try and start your own business, but it’s expensive compared to the internet and does not offer the same scope. The internet is still relevantly cost effective and offers to global 24/7 access to clients and revenue streams.

Since we both are in similar situations with small, growing companies, with stable clients and it is always interesting to talk to Peter and I thank him for the evening and some of the useful tips he gave me on content creation which intend to exploit.

Later than evening I went to see another friend of mine Nathan Ridley who owns a little photoshop site Graphics District which has been getting very decent amounts of traffic since he launched it. Nathan has been getting into Internet Marketing just as I have been getting out of it, it was good catching up with him and seeing the Content Management System called “Content Canvas” he is working on. Content Canvas looks like it is going to be a very kick ass CMS and I might even use it myself for some of my sites, Nathan is a very talented and diligent developer and I think he is going to make his mark with this product. One of the advantages of building your own CMS is even if you don’t sell it you can still use it for your own sites to dominate the search engines by building it to automate a lot of the posting to social and video media sites and that is exactly what he’s doing.

It was a good night and I look forward to more of them in the future.

Thanks Pete… was good to catch-up. I’m going to be out of town for a few weeks, but when I get back we’ll have to do it again. You’ll have to keep me posted on how those content creation strategies go ;)

I love the way you put your conversation topics into dot points. It makes it so easy for me to read and understand what you’re talking about.

I’m sure Matt Cutts would agree too.

Glad you guys are after World domination, it’s still eluting (deluding?) me, that’s for sure. Hope all is well! Also Peter (Laurent) what sites of mine were you looking at in Noosa?

It’s funny, I have just realised everybody has been after my damn serps, most of the low hanging ones anyway. Clearly coping my techniques (well what they can find), but the best is John (you know who!) digging up all the threads I’ve ever commented in and droping links to his site with anchor text of what I’m ranking for in Brisbane. It’s hilarious.

Funny comment Robert!

Is Brisbane still there?

These weren’t the low hanging ones, the only long tail ones I compete on are domestic flights at the moment… My travel efforts are moving more towards NZ and the USA markets. This was sunzine.net ranking in number two for “Noosa Holiday Accommodation” when I was advising a client what to write content on for a new site and what domains to buy. I ended up picking up noosa-holiday-accommodation.com when it dropped last month which I though would come in handy for SEO… I didn’t like my chances getting the straight urls as cheaply but given the registrar of choice (Distribute IT) I assume you have something to do with either the .com and the .com.au.

What are your travel plans and when do you think you’ll be back in town? I’ve been spending a lot of time in the library reading old books, you’d be amazed at the amount of great “knowledge” you find in those books… I have been finding work a lot easier since reading all the books!
